The English Intensive Program at the University of Ottawa is designed to build your confidence and help you acquire the language, academic and intercultural skills necessary for success in your undergraduate or graduate program.

Course offerings

The Centre for Language Learning offers a range of online English intensive courses.

ESL 0120, ESL 0130, and ESL 0140

Dates: September 3 to December 11, 2020

These courses will involve the following components:

  • English for Academic Purposes: Working with University of Ottawa professors, students use online resources and tools to develop their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills to effectively comprehend and communicate ideas in an academic context. They learn the discourse structures, grammar, and vocabulary required for effective communication in their fields of study and develop critical thinking and study skills. 
  • Academic English Enrichment: Working with a teaching assistant from the University of Ottawa, students gain additional opportunities to master the academic language skills developed in the course. Emphasis is also given to helping students develop effective academic presentations and collaborate productively on group assignments. 
  • University Integration Workshop: Students develop learning strategies and study skills necessary for success at the University of Ottawa. Through this workshop they acquire an awareness of the academic culture of Canadian universities, along with a bank of campus and community resources, while having opportunities to reflect on the intercultural skills needed to connect with professors and classmates on campus.  
  • Interactive Learning Community: Students develop communicative and teamwork skills and acquire a sense of belonging in the university community by connecting with classmates and University of Ottawa students. 
  • Communication 1148: For students in ESL0140, this academic course is taught by a professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Ottawa and introduces students to basic concepts in interpersonal and organizational communication and provides students with an experience of an authentic university course.

**CMN 1148 is a 3-credit course, which can be applied towards a student's elective courses program requirements (eligibility based on individual program requirements).

Tuition

  • The tuition fee for each course is $6,016.
  • Health insurance for students outside of Canada will be removed. 
  • Students without a conditional offer can be admitted to this program, if they successfully complete an online language placement test.

ESL 0140 (Academic English Accelerated)

Dates: July 2 to August 28, 2020

This course will involve the following components:

  • Academic Reading to Write: Working with University of Ottawa professors, students use online resources and tools to develop strategies and skills for reading academic texts and for effectively communicating ideas through academic writing. They also learn the discourse structures, grammar, and vocabulary required for effective academic writing and develop critical thinking and study skills.
  • Academic Listening to Speak: Students use online resources and tools to develop their listening skills, with the aim of effectively communicating ideas through academic presentations and discussions.  In addition to learning the discourse structures, grammar, and vocabulary required for effective oral communication in academic contexts, students will also develop their abilities to communicate clearly and effectively with professors and classmates. 
  • Writing for Discipline Specific Purposes: Students are guided by University of Ottawa professors in researching, planning, developing, revising, and presenting extended academic essays and reports following the academic integrity standards at the University of Ottawa.   
  • University Integration Workshop: Students develop learning strategies and study skills necessary for success at the University of Ottawa. Through this workshop they acquire an awareness of the academic culture of Canadian universities, along with a bank of campus and community resources, while having opportunities to reflect on the intercultural skills needed to connect with professors and classmates on campus.
  • Interactive Learning Community: Students develop communicative and teamwork skills and acquire a sense of belonging in the university community by connecting with classmates and University of Ottawa students.
